Thailand Visa for Russians in 2026: 30-Day Visa-Free, Extensions & Types

Thailand visa-free entry for Russians is 30 days (not 60), plus a 7-day extension for 1,900 baht. Complete guide to 60+30 day tourist visas, O/B/ED/Elite types,

How long can you stay in Thailand without a visa, and how can you extend your stay? This is the question tourists ask most often. Rules change, and what worked a couple of years ago is no longer relevant today. Russians used to get 60 days visa-free, but now the exemption has returned to 30 days, and it can only be extended by 7. Let's break down the entry and stay options available in 2026, what documents you need at the border, and what to do if you want to stay a bit longer.

Visa Exemption: 30 Days

Russian citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for 30 days — by land (overland border crossings) and by air. The stamp is placed directly in your passport at the border; there is no need to arrange anything in advance.

Important note: From July 2024 for a certain period, the visa exemption was granted for 60 days. This rule was canceled, and it is back to 30 days now. If you come across an older article mentioning 60 days, it is outdated. It's possible the rules might be relaxed again in the future, but for now, plan for 30 days.

The Main Rule
30 days is the total duration, not "30 days upon arrival and another 30 on your next visit." It is counted by the dates on your stamp. Leave earlier, and you saved time; overstay, and you'll face a fine and problems on your next entry.

Extending for Another 7 Days

If 30 days isn't enough, you can stay longer by visiting a local immigration office. However, they currently don't extend it by 30 days like they used to, but only by 7 days — this is the so-called "extension of stay".

  • Where to go: Immigration Office in Jomtien (Jomtien, Soi 5) — for Pattaya and Chonburi province.
  • Cost: 1900 ฿.
  • What you need: passport, photo, completed TM.7 form, a copy of your visa page and entry stamp, and sometimes proof of address (the landlord's Thai house book or a hotel booking).
  • The catch: A 7-day extension is an "emergency" measure and isn't given to everyone. It's best not to rely on it as your primary way to extend your stay.
Overstaying is Bad
If you overstay even by one day, you will be fined 500 ฿ per day upon departure. Up to 40 days, you just pay the fine at the airport. More than that, and it becomes a criminal offense resulting in being blacklisted, up to a multi-year ban from entering the country. Don't risk it.

Tourist Visa (TR) — 60 + 30 Days

If you are planning a trip lasting a month or more, it's more cost-effective to arrange a Tourist Visa (category TR) in advance at a Thai embassy — for example, in Moscow.

  • Duration: 60 days of stay upon arrival.
  • Extension: another 30 days at immigration (1900 ฿). In total, up to 90 days legally.
  • Documents for the embassy: passport (>6 months validity), photo, hotel booking, return ticket, bank statement (~20,000 ฿ per person), completed application form.
  • Processing time: 3–5 business days.
A Tourist Visa is the most reliable way to stay up to 3 months without visa runs and stress. If you are going for a long time, arrange it in advance.

Other Visa Types: O, B, ED, Elite

If you plan to live in Thailand long-term, there are non-immigrant visas. All of them are issued by an embassy and subsequently extended at an immigration office within the country.

Non-Immigrant O — Retirement (50+)

For people over 50 years old. Initially 90 days, extendable for a year provided: a bank deposit in a Thai bank of at least 800,000 ฿ or a confirmed income of 65,000 ฿/month. A retiree's spouse gets an O visa even if they are under 50.

Non-Immigrant O — Marriage to a Thai Citizen

90 days → extended for a year. Requires a bank deposit of 400,000 ฿ or an income of 40,000 ฿/month.

Non-Immigrant B — Business and Work

For working in a Thai company. Requires a Work Permit. Extended for a year upon proof of employment and salary.

Non-Immigrant ED — Student

For studying: language courses (Thai, English), universities, culinary schools. Extended every 90 days.

Beware of "Visa Agencies"
Many agencies sell an ED visa as a way to "live in Thailand without actually studying." This is a gray scheme: immigration checks whether you actually study, and if it's a bogus school, your visa will be canceled, and you could be blacklisted. Only get an ED visa if you genuinely plan to study.

Thailand Elite Visa

A paid program for those who visit frequently and for long periods. Options range from 5 years (≈900,000 ฿) to 20 years (≈5,000,000 ฿). It grants multiple entries, expedited passport control, and various bonuses. Convenient for wealthy expats, but not for the average tourist.

Border Documents

For visa-free entry, a valid passport (valid for >6 months) is formally sufficient. However, at the border (especially at the airport), they may ask for:

  • Return ticket or a ticket to a third country within 30 days. This is a common reason for entry denial — without an onward ticket, you might not even be allowed to board your flight.
  • Proof of funds: ~20,000 ฿ per person (40,000 ฿ per family). Cash or a bank statement.
  • Hotel booking for the first few nights.
Travel Hack
If a return ticket is too expensive and you don't want to buy a "real" one, get a fully refundable ticket or a cheap flight to a neighboring country (Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City) — this is enough to prove "onward travel".

Visa Runs and Risks

A visa run is a trip to a neighboring country (Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia) and re-entering Thailand to reset the 30-day stamp. People used to live like this for years. Now, immigration is cracking down on this:

  • With frequent entries, border guards will ask questions: the purpose of your visit, where you live, and what you do.
  • "Professional visa runners" can be turned away at the border and put on a watch list.
  • 2–3 visa-free entries per year are usually fine. Trips every 30 days are a major red flag.

If you genuinely need to live in Thailand long-term, get a proper visa (TR for 60+30 days, O for retirement/marriage). The visa run lifestyle is over.

***

In short: 30 days visa-free, +7 days at immigration for 1900 ฿, or a Tourist Visa for 60+30 days. For living long-term — non-immigrant visas (O, B, ED) or Elite. The main thing is not to overstay and not to abuse visa runs. As long as you follow the rules, Thailand will welcome you hospitably, and tours and Pattaya restaurants will remain easily accessible without any extra stress.
