Shopping in Pattaya: The Best Malls and Markets & What to Buy

Planning to shop in Pattaya? Discover the best malls like Central Festival and Terminal 21, plus top markets. Get tips on bargaining, clothing sizes, tax refund

If you think Pattaya is only about beaches, cheap fruit cocktails, and lazy lounging, I’ve got good news for you. The local shopping scene has long outgrown its status as a mere "tourist bazaar." Shopping in Pattaya today is so diverse that you can hunt for new sneakers, a designer dress, and fresh mangoes all in a single day—if you know where to go. As a local resident, I’m happy to share my secrets on where to find the best items and how to avoid spending too much money in the stores.

Where to Shop: Malls vs. Markets

Where you choose to shop depends entirely on your goal. Modern shopping malls are all about comfort, air conditioning, guaranteed quality, and fixed prices. People come here for clothes, electronics, and cosmetics, as well as to grab a great meal. But for cheap t-shirts, exotic fruits, souvenirs, and that authentic local vibe, you need to hit the streets.

Pattaya has it all: from glamorous boutiques to cardboard boxes of goods displayed on folding cots.

Night markets aren't just a chance to haggle and save money. They are a true social phenomenon and a deep dive into street life. Choose a mall if you need a specific item quickly, and confidently wander the market stalls when you’re craving atmosphere and spicy thrills for your stomach.

Top Shopping Malls

There are plenty of malls in the city, but a few clear standouts are definitely worth a visit.

Central Festival (located in the city center) is the flagship mall. It's an absolute giant spanning several floors. It houses global brands, an excellent electronics store, perfumeries, and a massive selection of Pattaya restaurants on the top floor.

Terminal 21 is my personal favorite, designed to look like an airport. Each floor is themed as a different city: London, Paris, Tokyo. It's a fantastic spot for budget-friendly photo shoots and for exploring Thai cuisine at the local food court—the prices there will pleasantly surprise you.

Keep the following malls on your radar as well:

  1. Royal Garden Plaza — perfect for families, as it houses the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum.
  2. Central Marina — a more budget-friendly option with great high-street brands and useful services.
  3. Outlet Mall — tourists often hop off a tuk-tuk from their tours specifically to grab discounted branded goods here.

The Main Markets

If you want to feel the true rhythm of Asia, head out into the streets. This is where all the life happens.

Market NameWhat to Look ForFeatures
Thepprasit Night MarketClothes, souvenirs, electronicsOpen only on weekends, huge, very crowded
Jomtien Night MarketStreet food, inexpensive itemsPerfect for dinner, lots of seafood
Pattaya Night BazaarClothes, souvenirs, leather goodsIndoor, great for taking shelter from the rain

The golden rule of any market is that haggling is always acceptable. But remember to be tactful: knocking 50% off the price of a cheap t-shirt is fine, but local vendors have their pride and profit margins to maintain.

Small Cash
Always carry small bills when visiting night markets. It makes bargaining much easier and ensures you won't be shortchanged.

What's Worth Buying

There are certain categories of items that are particularly worth bringing back from Thailand due to the difference in price or quality.

  • Cosmetics and skincare. Thai creams with snail mucin, coconut oil, and brightening effects cost pennies but work wonders.
  • Fruits and snacks. Dried mango, rambutan, and local chocolate made from cacao beans make excellent gifts.
  • Natural latex. Pillows and mattresses are significantly cheaper here than back home. The key is to choose certified shops rather than random street stalls.
  • Clothes and shoes. During summer sales, branded items can be 70-80% cheaper.
  • Electronics. Everything in official stores is securely packaged and often cheaper, but be sure to check the warranty.

Sometimes tourists combine shopping with sightseeing at attractions, picking up a memento after visiting a temple or a waterfall.

Tips: Taxes, Haggling, and Sizes

To ensure your shopping experience goes perfectly, you need to know a few important nuances about local retail.

Tax Refund

Thailand has a Value Added Tax (VAT) refund system for foreigners. If you spend 2,000 ฿ or more on a single receipt at participating stores, make sure to ask for a special tax refund form. You can claim your money back at the airport.

How to Haggle

Start by offering 70% of the quoted price. If the seller categorically refuses, just pretend to walk away—usually, they will call you back and hand over the item at your desired price.

How Much Things Cost
- Printed t-shirt at the market: 150 to 300 ฿.
- Quality shorts: 250–500 ฿.
- Dinner for two at a night market: 400–800 ฿.
- Natural latex pillow: 800–1,500 ฿.

Clothing and Shoe Sizes

Asia has its own sizing chart. A Thai size L roughly corresponds to a European S or M. Always try everything on, as returns are generally not accepted at markets.

Important
Be extremely careful when buying designer brands at markets. What is often sold as genuine is usually a low-quality knock-off that will fall apart at the seams after the very first wash.

Shopping in Pattaya isn't just an aggressive process of converting your savings into souvenirs. It’s a fantastic way to understand the local culture, learn how to smile while bargaining for a discount, and bring home not just items, but real memories.
